how to store website versions?

Hi,

I’m developing a website where I would like to have the ability to automatically save previous versions that could be restored at any moment (so I can damage-control interventions from the editors). Along that, it would be great to have a kind of mirror of the website, a preview of the changes being made on the site to be approved by a chief editor. (ex: a lower-level editor would edit the website’s contents, submit it to approval to the chief-editor, and only the latter would be have the authority to publish).

So, my question is:
Can I achieve this through some extension, plug-in, or customization of Frog?
Any hints?

Thanks,
Jorge Olino

I know versioning has already been discussed (don’t recall where) but would not expect it to be available soon as it isn’t on the roadmap yet.

Definately agree that it is something to look forward to though.

Not entirely related, but there is talk of a backup plugin too.

Here’s the reference to the versioning forum message

If there is interest I can do the versioning plugin. Actually kind of need it myself too.

PS. I think it does not belong into core but should be a plugin.

I’m absolutely interested. And having it as a plugin makes every sense, leaving the core simple as it should be.

I’m relatively new to open source, so I have to ask you: would you release it free, or are you considering selling it or taking it as a payed job?

I can guarantee you neither versioning or backup would make it into core.

System backups should be done entirely which basically means a mysqldump + filesystem backup scenario.

What is being discussed in the thread referenced by redcrew sounds more like an export plugin that a backup. After I’m done finalizing 0.9.5, I’m willing to take a crack at that.

Versioning doesn’t belong in core at all. :-) (Though I’d welcome a plugin for it)

Agree.

I would release it for free for all as I do with my other code. Sometimes when people want to give something back I might tell them that I do have an Amazon wishlist ;)

Fair enough. :-)

Another one here that is interested in version control.

I’m also interested in the ability to version content. I’m really surprised that it’s not on the roadmap. I imagine it would be a make or break feature for many people.

Ok ok. I cut down my amount of flying RC helicopters and will write the plugin as promised :)(I actually need it myself too at the moment)
