[Sticky] Frog Hosting (the good, the bad and the ugly)

Hello everyone, I’d really like to know about all of your hosting success stories and nightmares. I think it would be nice if we could compile some kind of ‘white list’ of supported hostings and ‘black list’ of hostings to avoid. This would help anyone less technically experienced be more confident in trying out and adopting Frog CMS and furthermore, eliminate (I hope) a lot of troubleshooting due to poor hosting setup. I know that you probably can install Frog on anything that has PHP5 and mySql support but sometimes, there is some configuration involved (server configuration via .htaccess or httpd.conf or other…). What I’d like to hear about are these hosts that you can just upload your files to and BAM!, your good to go. So, everyone, please just take 2 minutes to tell us : “Yeah, my host is X hosting inc. (URL) based in Y country and setup was flawless !” As always, the more info the better. Hoping to hear from everyone soon ! p.s.: any info about canadian hosting is more than welcome since I’m from Québec, Canada. |

On my part, I had a little problem with 1&1 earlier today. Seems they still run PHP4 by default so you have to add stuff to your .htaccess file. Maybe beginners should consider another host. |

This could be useful! I first used Frog with the free hosting service at Byethost and I can unreservedly say it is excellent. My original TestFrog still lives there. You can be up-and-running with Frog from sign-up to site-live in under five minutes, I reckon. (Frog CMS was originally “spawned” in Canada, btw!) |

We use both Media Temple and Mosso for hosting. Both work exceptionally well with Frog. Though, Media Temple has a funny glitch where it resets PHP5 to PHP4 after you upload the Frog files. It’s an easy enough fix. GoDaddy also works, but is a pain to set up. |

I am using Slicehost and have been happy with it. |

I did run into problems installing Frog on GoDaddy, it was working but I couldn’t allow mod_rewrite without breaking the site.. I didn’t investigate further though. So looks like GoDaddy is a no-no. |

I’ve used MediaTemple for a lot of Frog sites, but performance is bad and as everflight mentioned, you have to set it to PH5 every time, not once but twice before it takes effect—the first time it just ignores it for some reason. I’ve been moving sites over to Webfaction and it’s the best shared hosting provider I’ve dealt with (out of MediaTemple, Dreamhost and Hostgator). It works really well, the price is right ($9.50 a month or lower if you pay in advance) performance is excellent, and customer service is very rapid and friendly. It also supports Rails and Django hosting in the same account at no extra charge. Out of those four shared hosting providers that I’ve dealt with, MediaTemple is the worst. It’s no better than Dreamhost but charges twice as much. Performance is poor and service is poor. Good luck getting customer service to give you a real answer. They’re more likely to say, “Try it again.” I had to abandon a Rails installation on MediaTemple, because they wouldn’t help me. Hostgator is okay. It’s cheap (as low as $4.95 a month) and it works, but I’m reluctant to put anything important on it. If you like cpanel (I don’t), you might like Hostgator. I still have accounts on all of those services, but nowadays I’m tending to put everything on Webfaction. |

Ditto on MediaTemple. Not worth the frustration. Mosso is excellent especially if you’re running a business. Frog CMS runs flawlessly on their service. |

I use Media Temple and really like it, the bug with MT has to do with .htaccess resetting it to php4, but its easy to fix after you upload your .htaccess file and change it back to php5. I also used slicehost and they were awesome. I will go back to slicehost someday if i have time to manage my own slice. |

Bluehost works fairly well. I did have a few issues after they did a PHP upgrade, but they fixed them within a day or so. I prefer to host sites myself though. |

My FROG blog runs without hickups at Site5. Never had any issues that weren’t my own fault and their support is fast and freindly. I have heard good things about Ubiquityhosting located in Chicago and will be giving them a try. |

If any of you want a free host I run one that you guys might like. Its called VlexoFree and I offer 300MB-2GB cpanel hosting. I use Frog for the main site and it works perfectly. For the 300MB plan you just need a linkback on your pages and for the 2GB plan you need that and one of our ads on the pages. The site is at VlexoFree.com Just thought I would post this in case anyone wants another option for a place to host your website. Feed free to ask me any questions you have about it if you’re interested. |

I’ve heard from a colleague that Bytehost works excellent with Frog. Works fast without any funny glitches and problems. I’ve used Media Temple and i must say that it will first work good but soon enough, it will build your frustration with glitches popping from many parts. If you make some changes, there are times that they are totally ignored. |
